I just have to talk about this because it is infuriating to me that someone would believe that a grown man would claim to have invented the internet when he obviously did not. So I did some research:
The comment made by Al Gore was this (in a March 1999 interview with Wolf Blitzer):
“During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the internet.”
What he meant was that he was in Congress at the time of the invention of the Internet and he pushed the people to create it. The actual inventor of the internet was a man named Vincent Cerf. He is called “the Father of the Internet.” He is now the senior Vice President of MCI Worldcom. Vincent Cerf made this quote to back up Al Gore and his influence in the invention of the Internet: “The Internet would not be where it is in the United States without the strong support given to it and related research areas by the Vice President [AL GORE] in his current role and in his earlier role as Senator.”
There are countless men who actually were involved in the mechanical development of the internet who have backed up Al Gore’s statement. The inventor of the Mosaic Browser, Marc Andreesen, credits Gore with making his work possible. He received a federal grant through Gore's High Performance Computing Act. The University of Pennsylvania's Dave Ferber says that without Gore the Internet "would not be where it is today."
Joseph E. Traub, a computer science professor at Columbia University, claims that Gore "was perhaps the first political leader to grasp the importance of networking the country. Could we perhaps see an end to cheap shots from politicians and pundits about inventing the Internet?"
Therefore, clearly, it is ignorant to claim that Al Gore claimed to have invented the Internet because this WAS NOT what he claimed and WAS NOT what he meant.
Also, those who claim that Al Gore invented the Internet got their information from campaign statements made by President George W. Bush when he was up against Al Gore for the Presidential office. George W. Bush was expected to maintain a campaign based on honesty and integrity, but instead launched a full-scale attack on Al Gore using commercials and radio time claiming that Al Gore lied to the American people by claiming that he invented the Internet. Honestly, I am more ashamed of George W. Bush for making these claims than I am in Al Gore for making an ACCURATE statement about how he used his political position while in the United States Congress. Before George W. Bush stooped to the level he did, no one questioned the integrity of the remark made by Al Gore.

burj dubai
If you haven't heard about this, it's just insane. Currently under construction in Dubai, United Arab Emirates is the Burj Dubai tower. Upon its completion in 2008, it will be the tallest building in the world. It's final height is being kept secret, but it is rumored to be over 3000 feet tall. Here are some pictures just to give you an idea:

Is it strange that the only thing this really makes me think of is the Tower of Babel?

Elizabeth Taylor
"I treat the happiness I have now with great respect, great appreciation, because I know how fragile and precarious it is - how easily it can go. I am more aware that happiness is a composite total, that it is not some sort of sweet, safe heaven. To mean anything, it must include unhappiness."
-Elizabeth Taylor
I hate politics, but...
I hate politics. I guess I more just hate what politics does to people. I cannot even count how many silly conversations I have sat in on and just listened to people bicker about Republican vs. Democrat. When it really comes down to it, I think it is absurd for some people to claim to just 100% be one party or the other. Most of us fall somewhere in the middle or at least agree with a majority of the issues of one party or another.
The candidates for the 2008 election are beginning to announce their desire to run or make their statements. I have never really focused my attention on politics, choosing rather to just deal with what the majority of my fellow Americans decide is best. It's a dangerous stance to take and I'm making an effort to be more involved in learning about issues and candidates this time.
My problem is that I have a hard time voting one way or another for a party. I vote for the candidate. Part of the problem as well is that I firmly agree with many Replublican values and I firmly agree with many Democrat values. My friend, Peter, introduced me to a new plan that I think everyone should at least learn about if they are of age to vote in 2008.
Unity 08 is making an effort to provide a different type of ballot than has ever been offered before. They would like to offer a bi-partisan ticket. A Republican President and Democrat Vice President or vice versa. Personally, I think that would be amazing and would much better represent my political views and opinions.
My political views are still in development and I am making an effort to learn more about the issues that are important to me. I encourage everybody to do the same thing.

Dr. Burke continued
Wow, seriously...he just shouldn't talk at all.
ABC issued a statement on the whole thing:
"We have a long standing policy to create and maintain respectful workplaces for all our employees. We dealt with the original situation in October, and thought the issue resolved. Therefore, we are greatly dismayed that Mr. Washington chose to use such inappropriate language at the Golden Globes, that he himself deemed "unfortunate" in his previous public apology. We take this situation very seriously, and his actions are unacceptable and are being addressed."
I don't really like him anymore. And looks like he might get fired...???? McDreamy & George are way better anyway.
dr. burke...i'm disappointed in you
"At this point in time, we need to learn we should not say hateful words to one another."

And Erin also said that when she was in 7th grade, she had to write down all the states and instead of Virginia, she wrote Vagina and her teacher thought she was a perv.
Awesome.

A Walk to Remember
If any of you have ever read A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks, then read on. If you have not read it, then either go read it right now or don't read any further below.
If you have read it, then I'm sure you've gotten in some kind of debate about whether or not Jamie Sullivan lived or died in the end of the book. I believe she lived. But I found on Nicholas Spark's website that he is asked that question and I liked his answer! (I think he agrees with me.)
Did Jamie live or die at the end of the novel?
As I mentioned in the notes, this is the most frequently asked question I receive through the mail. As far as I can tell, about 70% of the people think Jamie passed away, another 30% believe she lived, and when asking the question, they offer "proof" for their reasoning.
Who once said that good books inspire debate?
There are a number of things that I have to explain before I get into the answer so you can understand my reasoning. Part of it goes back to Message in a Bottle. (For those who skipped the section on Background information for Message in a Bottle, you may want to go back before you read on for a fuller understanding). In a nutshell, while many readers loved the ending of that novel, a great many were furious with me for it. Really furious. This was on my mind while writing the novel, and part of me thought that if I killed off another major character, my readers would never forgive me.
Nonetheless, when I started the novel, I knew that Jamie was going to die. Every page, every scene, every chapter was written with that idea and it continued to proceed that way right up until the end of the novel, when the time came to write those words.
And strangely, I couldn't do it. I just couldn't do it. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't.
Why? Because by that time, I'd grown to love Jamie Sullivan. I marveled at her strength and faith, and I was proud of everything for which she stood. And I didn't want her to die.
So I found myself in a dilemma.
Also, keep in mind that the story was also inspired by my sister, who was very much alive as I neared the end of the novel. Since it was inspired by her, I began to think, and she was alive. . .
I remember leaning back in my chair and absently scratching my chin, wondering what to do. Because of the story, because of all that I had written with her death in mind, because she was growing weaker and weaker throughout the story, it would have been dishonest (and frankly, very manipulative), to have Jamie suddenly cured. I could imagine some readers reaching the end and thinking, If that was the case, why the big build-up with her sickness? Others might close the book and think the entire novel was believable up until that point. I didn't want either of those impressions of the novel.
So what was I to do? I didn't want her to die, and couldn't write those words. Yet, I plainly couldn't let her live, either. I opted for the only solution, the solution that best described the exact feeling I had with regard to my sister at that point: namely, that I hoped she would live.
That's the ending, folks. I wanted readers to finish with the hope that Jamie lived.
As to whether she actually lived or died, it's ambiguous and purposely meant to be that way. If you wanted Jamie to live, she lived. If you knew that Jamie would die, she died.
As for me, (and I'm not the final say -- I wrote the characters, but reader's know them just as well as I do), I thought there was a good chance that Jamie lived.
At least, I hoped so.
What did the last sentence mean?
Either the miracle was that Jamie lived (if that was the ending you imagined) or that Landon had experienced the miracle of first love and it had redeemed him (if you imagined that Jamie died.)
Dear John,
Synopsis: (Taken from NicholasSparks.com)
"An angry rebel, John dropped out of school and enlisted in the Army, not knowing what else to do with his life--until he meets the girl of his dreams, Savannah. Their mutual attraction quickly grows into the kind of love that leaves Savannah waiting for John to finish his tour of duty, and John wanting to settle down with the woman who has captured his heart. But 9/11 changes everything. John feels it is his duty to re-enlist. And sadly, the long separation finds Savannah falling in love with someone else. "Dear John," the letter read...and with those two words, a heart was broken and two lives were changed forever. Returning home, John must come to grips with the fact that Savannah, now married, is still his true love—and face the hardest decision of his life."
This book...oh my gosh...I just loved it. It just resonated with me for some reason and I ended the book just weeping. I cried for half an hour after I finished it because it just made me think about my year. It is SO worth reading if you like that kind of book. It is no classic literary masterpiece or anything. (My favorite book is The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas) But it is just a quick, wonderful read. His books just make me feel good. I just read them and even if they make me cry, I just love them. They are beautiful and they always make me want my life to be better. It was great.
Final Say: Read it. Especially if you've read his others. He completely redeemed himself from the last one.

Alpha Dog
Synopsis: Johnny Truelove is a 19 year old drug dealer in California. Through a bad drug deal, Jake Mazursky ends up owing him about $1,200. After Jake breaks in and trashes Johnny's house, Johnny and his friends go to find Jake, but see his brother Zach walking down the road. They catch him and beat him up and then take him home with them to hold him for ransom. He is aware of what is going on, but is having fun partying with Johnny's friends. It is based on the true story of Jesse James Hollywood who was the youngest person ever to be on the FBI's Most Wanted List.
I actually loved the movie. I have been reading about the case and the making of the movie for about a month now and was just excited to see how the Writer/Director Nick Cassavetes put it all together. I think Justin Timberlake is actually a really good actor. I saw him in Edison Force and thought he was great, so I was excited to see what he would do in a completely different kind of role. And he was great. Ben Foster who plays Jake Mazursky was pretty out there, but he was playing someone who was supposed to be a little crazy and on drugs pretty much constantly. So if you've ever been around people who are on a drug that makes them like that, he really wasn't too far off from what it would've been like. Sharon Stone's fatsuit in the end was pretty distracting because it looked ridiculous. But if you can get past those things, it was just great. What is interesting to me is that the movie was taken straight from the case files of Jesse James Hollywood's attorney. So the movie is as accurate as it could be. In an interview with Nick Cassavetes, he says that it is between 90 to 95% accurate. He said obviously the actual details of what was said between everyone couldn't be completely accurate. But the storyline and what happened in what sequence of events and who was there and what they saw was taken from the witnesses accounts of the events. I think that's pretty much fascinating.
Final Say: If you can get past the drugs, sex, violence & language, it's worth seeing if you're interested in the story at all. But go into it knowing that it is a true story.
Here are some interesting sites with information about the real guy:
