I am subscribed to a daily devotional from Southland Christian. This was the devotion for today and I just thought more people should read it.
I was listening to conservative talk radio around the time of the elections last November. I was curious to see what was being said about the elections and the change of power. I found it comical how people were calling in to the show completely beside themselves, borderline hysterical, and how the world is going to Hades in a hand basket because of the apparent power shift to the Democratic Party.
I was impressed by one caller's questions. His honesty was clear and something we all should consider, not just during our election time. The caller first stated he was not a very religious person and that he regularly listens to find out what "the people" are saying. He then remarked how he noticed a lot of the regular (read "Conservative") listeners and callers would commonly express that they were praying for the elections and how God will be victorious.
What was his question? He asked, "Do the callers still think God was victorious and the election was an answer to prayer or do they believe their prayers were ignored?" Uh oh, does this mean God is no longer on the side of the Republican Party? In my opinion, it's a good reminder that God is not influenced by votes or elections or party affiliation. We often put God in things He is not. He's so much bigger than that!
He does call us to obedience, however. He demands our attention. He reminds us He is in charge! He wants us to return to Him, confess our disloyalty to things other than Him, and turn our hearts to the things His heart is set on. When we do this, we reap the benefits of deliverance, restoration and peace.
I'm reminded of a prayer spoken in a garden once: Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done. (Luke 22:42, NIV)
