Dirty Dancing 20th Anniversary poopoo

So, evidently Dirty Dancing is $10 per ticket just because it's a 20th Anniversary thing!
I love movies and I love Dirty Dancing, but I'm not paying $10 a ticket to go see that.
So a girls night is desperately needed soon to watch this movie and make milkshakes.
Any participants??

Today

Today I...

Woke up late
Went to see my new house
Went to church
Went to dinner
Watched Desperate Housewives
Watched a Buffy episode with my cousin, Seth
Ordered my complete Buffy DVD collection!!!!

It was a good day!

PostSecret 4-29-2007

This one makes me very sad.
I'm sad for the person that wrote it and I'm even sadder for the person it is about.

This is totally me.
When I buy Buffy DVDs or something, I should probably buy something else to look less dorky.
And I still can't buy tampons without buying a couple of other things.

Birthday Cards!

(I got this post, almost word for word, from M Worsham)

This little boy's name is Shane Bernier. Many of you may have heard of him, but he is 7 years old and lives in Lancaster, Ontario. When he was 5, he was diagnosed with Lymphoblastic Leukemia and was doing well until June, where he experienced a relapse. Instead of asking for money, toys, or a trip to Disney World, his one wish is to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records for receiving the most birthday cards. His goal is 350 million cards. Each card he receives will give him that much more hope. His birthday is May 30th and the record begins on May 1st. The rules are that he has to receive the card between those dates and it has to be a store bought card...(homemade doesn't count, but will still be appreciated!) You can get real birthday cards at Walmart for 48 cents...which I think we can all spare. I think this is very cool and the fact that this little boy still has a positive outlook, warms my heart. I will be sending a card for sure...maybe even two. It will only take a few minutes of your time and about a dollar to help make Shane's wish come true!!
If you want to send Shane a card, the address is:

Shane Bernier
PO Box 484
Lancaster, Ontario
K0C 1N0
Canada
(it takes 2 stamps!!!)

Exercise!!

Up until today, I hadn't worked out in 10 days!! I need to get my butt in gear!!!

You all are supposed to make fun of me if I don't work out!!

Crazy Credit!!

[I am speaking mainly to my friends that are my age as opposed to the adults that I know. I'm also not trying to step on anyone's toes, just bringing up an issue I've noticed.]

I know some people who are aggressively against credit cards. They think they are the most awful thing and can destroy your life. They CAN destroy your life, but this sort of mentality usually comes from someone who ignorantly misused a credit card.

Using self control and good money management, a credit card can be an incredible asset and is almost absolutely necessary in order to have good credit. This is my credit blog! I just wanted to tell you how Lewis and I work it out, just as an example (although not an absolute suggestion). You have to choose what is best for you, I just hate when people maintain a really negative view of credit cards because their parents were in debt. You don't have to use a credit card like that! This is how we do it, but investigate for yourself and do what is best for you!!

Lewis and I use our credit cards for almost everything. We don't use cash or checks unless absolutely necessary. But we don't spend above our budget. This way, we pay off our credit cards completely upon every due date. We never carry a balance into the next month, therefore never paying interest. If you use your credit card like cash and only spend what you can afford to pay off that month, your credit score will rise and very quickly.

Both of us have high credit scores. (I don't know the etiquette on that kind of thing, so I'm not going to say specifically what they are, but from what I've heard I think Lewis' is really high. Mine is only 20 points behind his, but I've only had credit for like a year and a half or something.) But anyway, because our credit scores are high, we never have to pay a deposit or anything for a cell phone or utility company when setting up new service, we got approved for a lower mortgage loan rate than we would have gotten otherwise, and we are easily approved for housing or car purchases (although we have paid in full up front for both our cars, so we don't pay interest on those either). Now, I will admit that Lewis' dad was an accountant for the Kentucky State Government, so Lewis' financial planning is very meticulous and budgeted. Not everyone comes from that sort of background, but there are classes you can take and there is lots of information you can read to become more educated in financial planning!

I do understand that some people have a problem with spending. Having a $4,000 limit on a credit card when you are in college can be a huge problem for some people. I did have a friend who I think had some sort of problem. He literally could not keep himself from spending to the limit on his credit card. If you are like this, then definitely avoid credit cards. But for those of you who have good self-control and are just afraid of it because your parents were thousands and thousands of dollars in debt, you don't have to be like your parents!! It will be okay!!

Either way, I just want to encourage everyone to learn as much as you can and to practice self-control before shutting out credit cards or loans completely. They can be a really great asset in our culture today.

Here are some sites about credit planning and money management:

Money Matters
Smart About Money
CNN - 5 Tips for Cleaning up your Credit

There are also classes at local colleges that teach money management. I know at UK there is a FAM 251 class - Personal and Family Finance and at BCTCS there is a MGT 120 class - Personal Finance.

GREEN Book Club

These are suggested books from IdealBite.

I will be checking them out!!

  • Natural Capitalism by Paul Hawken, Amory Lovins & L. Hunter Lovins - tip top on the Biter syllabus and a well-written read, the co-founder of Smith & Hawken and friends lay out how companies can do well by doing good ($13).
  • The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan - you are what you eat - and if you're American, apparently you are corn. Or so says a NY Times columnist in this groundbreaking look at how we eat ($17).
  • Cradle to Cradle by Michael Braungart & William McDonough - how do edible grocery bags sound? Explorations in waste reduction, laid out with style and sass ($16).
  • Crimes Against Nature by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. - RFK Jr. explains how the US government could destroy - or save - the environment ($15).
  • Plan B 2.0 by Lester R. Brown - on all of our nightstands and we're planning to read it as soon as we actually get back to our own bedrooms since we've been traveling so much lately ($12).
  • Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser - this exposé on the sustainability (or lack thereof) of our fast food nation is also coming soon to theaters ($11).
  • Stop Global Warming by Laurie David - rockin' guide to saving the world, from an avid Biter ($10).
  • Blue Marble - click on Library - this socially responsible investment firm will actually lend you some of these books if you can't get 'em at your own library branch.

Feeling Down?

I don't know about you, but struggling with depression and lately anxiety has been a constant struggle in my life. I can put on a happy face when I need to, but sometimes it gets hard to make it through the day. I know I'm not the only one!

My main issue while dealing with this problem is that I am not a big fan of prescription medication to cure my depression and anxiety. Not that I am against medicine at all, it works very effectively for some people. But I don't like the idea of having to get a prescription to feel better. I have always been much more inclined to use natural remedies, such as St. John's Wort and Ginkgo Biloba. These have worked very well for me! My friend Emily just told me about Fish Oil, too. She was told it is very effective as well!!

Here are some new natural depression remedies that I've just learned about:
(products and descriptions from IdealBite)

Burps & Farts

I'm sorry, I just think this is hilarious. I'm going through my saved IdealBite emails!!

Farm animals account for 20% of global methane emissions, but most is produced by burping, not farting.

The average adult passes gas 14 - 23 times a day.

Because of their diets, vegetarians and vegans tend to fart more than omnivores.

Want to keep your toots to a minimum?? Check out these natural products:

  • Bean-zyme - the vegan equivalent of Beano (which contains fish gelatin), with a proven anti-gas enzyme ($7).

Silk Soymilk (My personal favorite is chocolate)

Think there ain't nothing like the real thing?

The Bite
Not so - at least in the dairy department. Take Silk Soymilk. It looks like milk. It pours like milk. It tastes like milk (although some discriminating Biters prefer the taste of Silk to cow's milk). And you can find it next to the regular milk at your local supermarket. The difference? It could be the soy-lution to a few of the world's problems, due to the natural health benefits of soy and Silk's commitment to going green (like using clean wind energy). Vive la difference!

Company Background
Back in 1977, entrepreneur Steve Demos sold tofu products from a small store in Boulder, CO. After his ice cream and meatless hot dogs brands failed to take off, Demos put all his energy into making soymilk, selling from dispensers at his store. Thirty years later Silk's the number-one producer of organic soymilk. And when Ellen Feeney, VP of Responsible Livelihood at WhiteWave Foods (Silk's parent company) tells us, "We take our commitment to the environment seriously," she's not kidding. The company's alternative energy use and green HQs prove it. Eco-initiatives aside, pour some Silk on your cereal, stir it into your coffee, or just sip it as a filling snack, 'cuz this is soy you're gonna enjoy.

Why Care

  • This month introduces the new Green Caps program, where Silk donates 30 kilowatt-hours in offsets for every UPC code customers enter at its website.
  • Offsets 100% of the power used in production by supporting clean, renewable wind energy - to the equivalent of planting 72,000 acres of trees since 2003.
  • Operates a "Zero Waste" program at HQ, with biodegradable utensils, and full-scale recycling and composting programs.
  • All chairs and workstations at HQ are made from at least 40% recycled materials and are at least 95% recyclable.
  • Uses partially recycled shipping materials and has reduced the amount of material used on each shipping box.
  • 92% of employees participate in the Boulder Community Food Share program's Annual Corporate Giving Challenge, with funds matched by Silk.
  • Silk soy is not genetically modified.

Keeping It Real
Silk suffered some scrutiny in 2003. After a soy crop failure in the U.S., it needed to outsource some of its soy production to China and South America. Feeney says that while there are no plans to grow 100% of their soy stateside, the company "will continue to source the vast majority of [its] soy domestically." Also, Silk does not use recycled cartons, but neither do most similar food brands, since "there aren't a lot of FDA-approved options for food-contact packaging."

(Also, Starbucks uses exclusively Silk Soymilk at all of their stores.)

Ahem, Attention All Buffy Fans

Me & Hannah have been watching Buffy everyday. It's girl bonding. And it rocks.
So I found some Buffy sites that I want to share with the world. This is my official Buffy post.

First of all, quotes. I've been reading Buffy quotes for about 30 minutes now and I keep laughing out loud and my husband is now wondering why he married me. These are my favorites:

Buffy: I now have my weapons categorized from A to Z, from "axe" to..."zee other axe".

Giles: I'm not supposed to have a private life?
Buffy: No. Because you're very, very old and it's gross.

Professor Maggie Walsh: So, the Slayer.
Buffy: Yeah, that's me.
Professor Maggie Walsh: We thought you were a myth.
Buffy: Well, you were myth-taken.

Buffy: [jumps down from window] What are you doing here?
Spike: I...
Buffy: Five words.
Spike: [counts on his fingers] Out... for... a... walk.
Spike: [pause] ... bitch!

Anya: Look, I know you find me attractive. I've seen you looking at my breasts.
Xander: Nothing personal, but when a guy does that, it just means his eyes are open.

Cordelia: So does looking at guns make you wanna have sex?
Xander: I'm 17. Looking at *linoleum* makes me wanna have sex.

Xander: That's okay. I don't wanna go. I'm just gonna go home, lie down and listen to country music. The music of pain.

Giles: Do you want me to wag my finger at you and tell you that you acted rashly? You did. A-and I can. I know that you loved him. And... he... has proven more than once that he loved you. You couldn't have known what would happen. The coming months a-are gonna, are gonna be hard... I, I suspect on all of us, but... if it's guilt you're looking for, Buffy, I'm, I'm not your man. All you will get from me is, is my support. And my respect.

Spike: You listen to me. I've been alive a bit longer than you, and dead a lot longer than that. I've seen things you couldn't imagine, and done things I'd prefer you didn't. I don't exactly have a reputation for being a thinker; I follow my blood, which does not always rush in the direction of my head. So I've made a lot of mistakes. A lot of wrong bloody calls. A hundred plus years, only one thing I've ever been sure of. You. Look at me. I'm not asking you for anything. When I tell you that I love you, it's not because I want you, or 'cause I can't have you, it has nothing to do with me. I love what you are, what you do, how you try... I've seen your strength, and your kindness, I've seen the best and the worst of you and I understand with perfect clarity exactly what you are. You are a hell of a woman. You're the one, Buffy.

Sickness Part 2

So I left work today at 10am because I'm still sick.

It sucks. Everybody is getting it!! I stayed home more to keep from getting other people sick than anything because it's just getting passed from person to person! Gross!!

Anyway, I got to take a nap and use a LOT of tissues and read some of my History book because I didn't go to class tonight!

Hope everyone else's day was lovely!!!

Also, I watched a bunch of Buffy videos. I'm preparing a Buffy post for the future, but I'm not ready yet.

Sickness

I'm sick.

First Emily had it.

Then Lewis got it.

Welcome to the Real World

Sanjaya got booed at a baseball game last weekend!

I feel sorry for the poor kid, but I think that if each person could only call in and vote ONE TIME each night, Sanjaya would've been voted off a long time ago. There are people that call at least 100 times each week just to vote for him!! That's nuts!!

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!

Our closing date for our house is Friday, April 27!!!!

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm going to be a home-owner!!!

Look how cute my kitchen is:

Virginia Tech

This breaks my heart. The number of people killed is up to 31 as of 2:46pm today, April 16, 2007. It's the worst campus shooting in U.S. history. At least 20 other people are injured.

Roommate Needed!!!

My friend Brooke:

Needs a roommate!!!

Non-smoker, Non-ugly.

She rocks and she lives in the same apartment complex as me, so I can vouch for the apartment!! It's in a good area and it's big! You would have your own private bathroom!! Woot woot!! Let me know if you are interested or if you know anyone who is!!

Look, Brooke is super cute and fun!!:

Be her roommate!!!
