Susan is the Director of Human Resources in my office. She wrote the following after the interviews we conducted yesterday and today. The job market is hard right now and every position we post a listing for is met with at least 150 resumes. We're definitely in a recession. All the more reason to effectively write up a resume and conduct yourself well in an interview.
Being in Human Resources means it is just a part of the job that you will have to hire new employees. However, the search can be a little tiring. Here is what you, the job applicant, can do to make the search easier for both of us.
Thank you and good luck!
- Read the ad carefully; don’t state your desire for a rewarding career in the field of micro-biology when the ad was for a chemist.
- Honestly, no one is going to read your 5 page resume. 1 page, period.
- Use spell check, after the 4th misspelled word or typo I’m finished.
- Start with your education and degrees (don’t include the dates).
- Move on to your work experience and start with your most recent job.
- Finish with your qualifications.
- Don’t use your resume to tell me your reason for wanting the job. That is what your 1 page cover letter is for.
- List any references on a separate sheet. So, we are at a max of 3 sheets of paper you will be sending to me. Right?
- Do not and I repeat, DO NOT bring drinks or snacks to the interview with you.
- Shower before your interview and go easy on the perfume or cologne.
Thank you and good luck!
